Amplified Ensembles

Nexus now offers an amplification add-on for all of our standard ensembles! We will bring our own instrument mics and PA system to help boost our acoustic sound during cocktail hours, noisy receptions, larger outdoor gatherings, or events where we must be set further from the guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I add on amplification?

Our acoustic string instruments have a unique, rich tone – which is why we love them! While they are made to project well in certain acoustic settings, sometimes they are simply unable to compete with guest noise, large outdoor settings, and other environmental factors. Additionally, the speakers offer the ability to play light background music when the live ensemble breaks.

Since every situation is different, we are happy to discuss the specific needs for your event and if amplification might be the best option.

Will amplification change the quality of sound?

Nexus has high-quality instrument microphones – called DPA 4099 CORE – that are meant to ensure as much of the clarity, openness, and consistency of the acoustic instrument as possible despite some compression of the sound when coming through speakers. While pickups capture the vibration of the instrument body (and tend to sound more electric or "tinny" as a result), the DPAs are pulling the instrument's sound from the air and will, therefore, have a much more realistic, rich quality.

What equipment will you bring?

Nexus will provide DPA mics for each instrument in the ensemble and a PA system with two speakers. We will arrive approximately 45-60 minutes prior to the start of our performance to set up and soundcheck. Please note that we do not currently offer a speaking microphone for officiants or emcees.

How large of an event does your PA system cover? Will it be too loud for my guests to hear each other?

We do have full volume control of our amplified setup, so we can bring it up or down in real time based on how the event noise fluctuates (or turn it off altogether if needed!). Our goal is to simply boost our acoustic sound enough that it is still present in the event ambiance, but not overwhelming guest conversations.

Our system, the Fender Audio Passport Venue S2, is suitable for up to medium and large audiences, however, exact guest counts will vary widely based on each event scenario: will you be outdoors? Are guests coming and going in the space? Will the venue's acoustics also make conversations louder? Feel free to reach out with your specific event scenario and we can discuss the best options.

Can you work with my DJ or band for amplification instead?

You are welcome to have your DJ, band, or venue amplify our string ensembles instead. This will not require an additional cost from Nexus unless an arrival earlier than our standard 30 minutes is required. Typically, the A/V person will also provide instrument mics in these situations; we are happy to bring our DPAs if availability allows, however, they have certain requirements (like phantom power), so we would recommend putting us in touch with your A/V contact first to make sure they have the correct equipment.

How much does amplification cost?

Cost varies slightly depending on the size of the ensemble and arrival times (for example, if you need us to be fully soundchecked more than 15-30 minutes prior to the event). In most situations, the additional fee will be around $200-$500. For an exact quote, please connect with us below.
